Squash Ball Dots Explained: Which Ball Should You Play With?

The coloured dots on a squash ball are not decoration. They tell you how much the ball bounces and how long it stays in play. Choosing the right ball for your level makes the game more fun and helps you improve faster.

Why squash balls have different speeds

A squash ball is a hollow rubber ball that bounces more as it warms up. A cold competition ball barely bounces at all. Faster, bouncier balls give beginners more time to reach the ball, while slower balls reward good movement and shot-making at a higher level.

The dots, from most bounce to least

Blue or "max" balls: the largest and bounciest balls, for beginners and young children.

Red or "progress" balls: a little slower, for beginners who are starting to rally.

Single yellow dot: a slow ball with a bit more hang time than competition balls, good for improving club players.

Double yellow dot: the official competition ball. It has the lowest bounce and the most control, and it is the ball used in club leagues and tournaments.

Names and colours vary slightly between brands, so always check the pack, but the order is the same: the more dots, the slower the ball.

Warm up the ball

Double yellow dot balls only play properly once they are warm. Hit the ball firmly to each other for a few minutes before you start scoring. On a cold court the ball may need even longer, and a cold ball that "dies" on the floor is normal until it heats up.

Which ball should you use?

If rallies keep ending after one or two shots, move to a bouncier ball. If you can rally comfortably and the ball keeps sitting up for your opponent, move down to a slower ball. Most regular adult club players end up on the double yellow dot.

How long do squash balls last?

A ball can last for many sessions, but it will eventually lose bounce or split. Keep a spare in your bag so a match never stops for lack of a ball.
