Padel Racket Shapes: Round vs Teardrop vs Diamond for Beginners
1 October 2026

The shape of a padel racket head decides where the sweet spot sits and how the weight is balanced. That is why the same player can feel completely different with a round racket and a diamond racket of similar weight. There are three main shapes.
Round padel rackets
Round rackets have a large sweet spot near the centre of the face and a well-balanced feel. They prioritise control and precision over power and are the most forgiving shape when you do not hit the ball perfectly in the middle. That makes them the usual recommendation for beginners and for defensive players who enjoy long rallies.
Teardrop padel rackets
Teardrop rackets are wider at the top and narrower towards the handle. The sweet spot sits slightly higher on the face, giving a mix of control and power. They suit all-round and intermediate players who want one racket for both defence and attack.
Diamond padel rackets
Diamond rackets have a pointed head with the sweet spot high in the face and a head-heavy balance. The extra weight at the top adds momentum for smashes and attacking shots, but the smaller, higher sweet spot is less forgiving. They are generally aimed at advanced, attacking players.
Which shape should a beginner choose?
Start with a round racket, or a teardrop racket with a low or neutral balance. A forgiving sweet spot helps you keep the ball in play while you learn the walls, and a lower balance is easier to control. Move to a teardrop or diamond racket when you are consistently hitting cleanly and want more power from the net.
Other things to check
Weight: lighter rackets are easier to manoeuvre; heavier rackets add power. Check the listed weight before you buy. Core and face: the foam core and face material change how soft or firm the racket feels, so try a racket before you buy if you can. Grip: add an overgrip for comfort and sweat absorption.
